FAQ

WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Reflexology is a preventative non-invasive holistic treatment. This natural healing and rejuvenating therapy is based on the principle that there are reflex points on the feet, hands and ears that correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. By applying pressure on specific reflex points, a reflexologist can stimulate corresponding organs or glands. When pressure is applied to the reflexes and congestion is felt under the skin, this indicates to the reflexologist that a blockage in the reflex may be causing a problem.

HOW CAN IT HELP CLIENTS?

Stress can cause disease. By decreasing stress, reflexology aims to improve health. Typically, a reflexology session provides relaxation and alleviates tension. The body's circulation is improved and its condition is normalized naturally without the client suffering any adverse effects. Reflexologists do not diagnose, prescribe or treat for specific conditions. Reflexology treats the body as a whole, working and balancing all the systems as one integrated organism.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT?

Prior to the actual treatment, a client's medical history is first discussed. The feet are then cleaned, thoroughly inspected for any common foot problems or pathogens, and warmed up using a variety of gentle manipulation techniques. The treatment begins by the reflexologist "walking" with his/her thumbs and fingers, along the bottom (plantar), top (dorsal), and sides (medial and lateral) of the feet, applying pressure to specific areas or reflex points. Depending on the needs of the client, a reflexologist will vary the amount of pressure on the different areas of the foot, hand or ear. For a gentle and soothing finish, foot cream is massaged into the feet or hands at the end of the reflexology treatment. The entire treatment requires approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

WHO CAN RECEIVE A REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT?

Reflexology is completely safe for most people, with very few contraindications. The basic technique and length of the session may vary, depending on the age and the physical condition of the client. Reflexology is safe and drug-free, so any person can begin reflexology treatments as soon as they wish.

HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER?

After the first treatment or two, your body may respond in a very definite way. You will most likely have a feeling of well-being and relaxation. However, some people feel mildly lethargic, nauseous or tearful. Some clients may have a Healing Crisis. This is all transitory as the body naturally heals and balances itself. Any response is vital information to share with your reflexologist, as it shows how your body is responding to treatment and signals if adjustments may be required to the treatment protocol.
